9.12.11 ... falling for friends

Screen_shot_2011-09-12_at_10

i didn't get my project from yesterday completed and i don't want to share it until it is done so here is a treasury i put together this evening. i searched for items from shops whose owners have been kind enough to feature me in their treasuries. many times more than once or even twice.

sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

8.10.11 ... quiet time text

1iphone

i woke up to see this and had to take a photo of the screen because it cracks us up that there is a quiet time and my sales text messages are held during the night (so as not to wake me up, i guess). these texts only work sporadically. they are fun, but not a true advantage. when i first added this feature it worked great, but that lasted less than a month. then it went away altogether for a long, long time and i kept checking and every time it indicated i was signed up but i never received my messages, so who knows what was happening. then one day it was back. i did do a lot of other creative pursuits today, including some crazy creative mending. this started out my day with a smile so i chose to share it with you all.

sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

3.5.11 ... vintage postcard bookmarks

3

i am going to be in a spring fling fair here in austin on march 16th so i started thinking about what i want to bring. it's been over two years since my last show and i think i've only been in a handful in the past 10 years. they're not what they used to be. they've gone the way of weddings and college tuition - absurd. but this is a rare, small one and i am looking forward to it.

3

so today i saw my stack of old postcards and started choosing those with good graphics for slicing and got to work. these are mostly from new orleans and nearby areas. i named each bookmark and printed the names, along with my signature on the backs - after these photos were taken. i love that car and the one way sign. each one has some little piece that intrigues me.

3

i enjoyed messing around with different threads and strings for the tails.

3

i wonder how many of these places still exist? i will have to google and wiki for a while this evening. it makes me sad thinking about how wonderful these restaurants and the hotel had to be. i do hope at least one or two have survived these past 30 or 40 years since these were printed.

3

the reverses are just as interesting as the photographs. another activity we all enjoyed was looking at the photos through a magnifying glass. the details are incredible. who knew? these would make super miniature jigsaw puzzles. but, for now, they are repurposed into groovy, one-of-a-kind bookmarks.

sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

Top Notch Friend

I created these for my New Jersey Cousin :)
Ann graciously offered to Godmother
Scout's acting journey.

I used two of Scout's original photographs
and made a thank you card and
magnetic bookmark pair.

I chose these Top Notch pics
both because Ann and Scout share
a passion and gift for beautiful photography
{You can see Ann's HERE}
and
for their unique connection between
Austin, Texas and the film industry
that Scout will enter.

Top Notch is featured in the film
Dazed and Confused.
And we are lucky enough to
have landed in its neighborhood
and experience frequenting this
rare blast from the past ...
the American Burger Drive-In.

Where have they all gone?
 WHY? is the more
appropriate question.

I cherish my good friends
and honest old
family owned
food establishments.

Forever may they bless us
with their presence.
Please visit and support
your locally owned treasures.

We need them much more
than they need us.

Thank you for
stopping by.
Remember to
fall forward this Sunday.

one small step ~ eclectic

I LoVeD finding these new~to~me shops.

The first in a series of joonwalk treasuries. Each one will employ a guessing game ~ can you find the tag search word I used that led me to these beauties? Each item may not have the tag since I arrived at these via my search word, but also sought out a lovely composition, so an item may be another one from a shop I found using the term. Answers for each treasury in the series will be revealed here and in the following treasury. The answer is: eclectic

My sister, ghouliegirl, is the only one who has sent me the correct term. Congratulations!!!

Scuppernote ~ A Happenstance Design

Last year's calendar & other recycled papers get a new life.
Tri fold notebook with velcro closure.

This afternoon while Scout was resting and the sky adhered to gray mode with a vengence, I worked on a new design. My objective was to create a notepad with a pencil attached. That didn't work out, but I love this design, which sprang from that template and formed as I went along. Here's the short of it:

Random papers are cut to the proper width. They will be stitched together & slipped into the reusable paper case (a folded magazine slice), which, in turn, will slip up into the paisley (vintage tie) fabric, which is sewn onto a card stock remnant & tucks into the inside pouch seen here:

The calendar is 2008's Scuppernut All Year Long . The view below shows the back of the note pad. If you look closely you can see that the fabric pocket wraps around the bottom edge, is pinked & stitched in place. The policeman fending off 'alligators in the sewers' (of NYC) is from a discarded Children's book. You can see the velcro closure in his choppers. Anyone else hearing little Drew Barrymore in their head right now?

Here is a view of the notepad insert system:

And here it is in place:

The finishing touch ... a denim shade cotton yarn bit with a vintage bunny button I've had forever and then some, as my favorite cousin would say. My pencil challenge is also solved as this led me to the answer that will see my design work. My template was made first, this evolved, so I abandoned that, but now as luck would have it, I am all ready for my next happenstance adventure. I'll see you soon ~ pencil me in, won't you? ox joon

Favorite Things...from the past.
Snoopy & Woodstock

A good friend and I were talking about our favorite vintage Snoopy treasures and I had just unearthed this in my settling in process. I love hearing about and seeing people's favorite things. I will be sharing more on a regular basis. Up next...a snippet of our decor, expanding on this tiny window...with some more of my all time favorite things.

Do you have a favorite Snoopy, Woodstock or Peanuts vintage keepsake? Or a super funky earring holder from days gone by? Let us know! And, if you post a photo somewhere, all the better. Don't forget to leave the link here.

Visions of Moving ... History Revealed

So, you all know we're moving. And sorting, purging and packing have begun in earnest. But the things you find! The places you'll go! And all within the confines of your own four walls.

I have had this little antique medicine bottle for a long time. It had OLD green sequins, still with thread remnants, inside. As I was making the 256,897th 'stay or go' decision, (and who really knows how 99% of these are determined, really, but that's another story) and ridding this cutie of its contents (because I am not in a sequin-y mood at this point, but, come on, the bottle is irresistible) I happened to look at it in a new light.

A little pause: check my etsy joonbeam shop frequently over the next two weeks because I am finding some very cool things and listing them there. Returning...

... And I can't believe I never read the label before. It's fascinating. Boomer Drugs is the Pharmacy. Rx # 15608 contained capsules for one 'Master Shannon' to be taken by mouth or (the other end). {Now how adaptable is this?} And here's the best part: for restlessness. I'm serious.

There is no date. No doctor's first name. No Pharmacist's name at all. No safety cap. And it's glass!

I googled and found a Boomer Pharmacy in Vancouver, BC, Canada that had relocated a few years ago. No idea if it is the same one. I would love to know more, especially the era. If it is from there, I have no clue how it found its way to me. The closest I've been is Oregon although I have no recollection of when or where I acquired this. But I've always loved it. And now I love it even more. And it's so nice and small I can feel absolutely guilt free about bringing it along!

The other thing I found was this box. I use it now to store future art collage goodies. It has scrabble tiles, vintage typewriter keys, colored wooden beads, broken jewelry, antique one of a kind pretties... but before I tell you its history, I thought it would be fun to see what your guess about the WARNING! is.

One all important hint: It is totally G rated and family friendly. Let's keep our minds in that neighborhood. Please leave your guess in the post comments and I'll tell the true story - and I think it is well worth the return visit - on Sunday, August 3rd. Meanwhile, I'll just be here packing and finding more trash and treasures and redefining the two on a moment-to-moment basis! ox joon

A little flying housewife post

I made this UTZ bag upcycled pocket for a new pen pal friend I met via my flying housewife etsy shop. Yes, some people write back to me! How fun is that? This pen pal inspired me to make this funky new creation. By now, you all know how much I LOVE to recycle and turn trash into functional art. But, guess what? There are more where I come from! Heavens to Murgatroid, can you imagine? It's so true. I would not lie to you. I had been looking at this potato chip bag for a while. I mean, look at that retro gal and the lime green base color? Irresistible. This sprang into my head and flew out on the wind across the miles. I wonder what she thinks of it? Well...what would YOU if it arrived in your mailbox? ox joon

PS. These are regional potato chips. Delicious. Support local products. Buy handmade! Be groovy! I hope this project inspires you to upcycle something from one of your local producers. If so, please let me know. I'd love to see it! Because environment is everything.

Create-a-Day Contest Prize

I'm a winner! My wonderful CAD friend, Sheasy, had a contest . Count how many unripened cherry tomatoes were in her beautiful photo. I guessed 32 and won! Woo hoo! And look what I won! I can't wait to receive my package. This is so ME. And look at the adorable felt tomato. That's one of her creations. She sells the grooviest felted handcrafted works of art in her etsy shop, SHEASY.

Now, if only I could have shared those lovely ripened tomatoes with Sheasy! My list of etsy friends continues to grow and my list of favorite etsy friends does too. Gee, I wonder why? :) Anyway...Sheasy is one of favorite etsy friends. I love her like etsy.

Treasury to Honor my flying housewife esty shop sellers

I curated this treasury...my first honoring my customers. I've been wanting to do this for quite some time with my joonbeam shop but didn't get around to it. I am convinced that I may have the absolute best overall feedback comments on etsy in my little brand new flying housewife shop. I am just beyond happy that I started this venture. It has been better than wonderful. Thank you all. To those without shops, if/when you open one, please let me know. I would like to make more of these every so often. I have the other four in my alternates and will switch them in later this evening. As time goes by and my feedback pool grows I will do my best to showcase everyone sometime.

To those of you visiting my blog, please stop by THIS TREASURY and visit these shops. I guarantee you will be delighted at what you find in each one. If you see this after it's expired please come visit my flyinghousewife feedback page and search their shops from there.

What do you think? I'd love to hear from you. ox joon

i love you like etsy

etsy has a new trademark agreement policy & my design was approved! Next to sign and return the contract, but, naturally, I wanted to include one of my pinbacks. And, then, naturally, I needed to send it in style ~ my style ~ and then, naturally, once I started browsing for something to catch my eye...and, well, it just kept going from there. This is Manhattan for the love of kismet. I mean, honestly. It was a sign.

Note: Click on the photo above to enlarge and read text with ease.

The toughest part was finding the picture of the earth in the right size. I wanted it to be a balloon. And I wanted an earth taken from space. People, I have only 14 days to return this contract!!! I have standards which does make my life challenging. No, I do not want an earth printed off of the internet. It has to be found in a discarded magazine, book, calendar or ??? Do I have a vault full of these? No Ma'am. No Sir. I do not. I gave myself a deadline. If I couldn't find one by last night, I would have to illustrate (GULP) my own. eek! Desperate times call for desperate measures, folks. I had an earth balloon in my head and come hell or high water, there was going to be one on this collage. No matter that all I sought was a simple attractive square in the first place. Let's be serious here.

There was only one way to solve this. I started working on my new horse linocut. (My first! This is another story. You can see a couple of photos on my flickr or my post on CAD. ) As I was searching for magazine pages for my little pony :), there she was!!!! My little blue planet. She was a little too large, but the thought of resorting to plan B ... Next ... how was I ever going to cut a perfect circle around her? Hey ... this looks like the size of my pinbacks. Hey... wait a minute... and the earth balloon magnet, she is born! Now, the true dilemma... how do I part with this baby? I am sorry, but this is one sweet collage. I am going to send it. And pray that whoever receives it at the other end of the rainbow has a brighter day because of it. Life is a mystery. I'm adding another to the mix.

What would your reaction be if, in the course of your workday ~ this includes you, house people. Remember, I am one of you and yes, we work! ~ you opened an ordinary envelope (OK, we all know, that is not possible here and I will be making a super joonie envie, but... I am overcome with the power of the written word) and this fell out onto your surface? I would love to know. The truth. Thank you for making it this far into my tale.

PS. Be sure and let me know if you'd like to hear how it all turns out, too. Or if your answer to this is: God forbid. ox to you all & happy, happy birthday little blue planet

Recycling Bin Dive ~ It's SpRing!

Today it is sunny and in the 60s, which is a first this year. Plus, as luck would have it, recycling week in my neighborhood! I found these treasures walking around just a few blocks of our home. And this is without rummaging through...I only took something if it called out to me. Plus, I am moving across the country in a few months so I was sparing in my picks. I am very excited to reuse these items, most in my creations for etsy. I will store craft projects in the Harrod's Tin as I love double decker buses and am not giving that one up. I am going to make my very first tin project, inspired by this incredible bath salts tin.

Do you regularly put items like these into your recycling bins? At the very least, the magazines and tins can be donated to libraries and thrift stores for resale. Yes, people will buy these! There are also places where you can swap your used magazines & books for others. So many people cannot afford these items and would be thrilled to have these to read or use for projects (or both ~ like me!) I passed by a perfectly adorable little blue couch, chairs & many vintage items. It's sad. You can call many recycling based organizations and they will come and pick up your cast offs. In many ways, it is actually easier to reuse, recycle or regift your dispensibles than it is to set them out on the curb.

I would love to hear what you do with your paper and tin goods. With your permission I can compile & incorporate them into a new blog post. I have plans for these paper items and you will see them reincarnated here on my blog and for sale in my etsy shop very soon! Remember: environment is everything.

Let's all do our part to save our little blue planet. One person does make a difference ~ either way. Which path will it be? Refuse or Reuse?
Thanks for visiting. And please share your comments, questions and/or ideas with permission for reuse :) below!

Have a wonderful day today and every day.

The Progression of Skylar ~ ACEO by Scout

Here is the completed ACEO. Scout's commentary and the stages of this beautiful artwork follow. The last photo below is the next-to-last stage. This is a gift from Scout to our etsy friend, Six, of sixsisters.etsy.com. You will want to visit her shop. To see more of Scout's artwork, visit our etsy shop, joonbeam.

No. 1 is the inked stage. I don't have a picture of the sketch because I didn't think to take pictures until this morning.

No. 2 is when I added the highlights. The ones on the wings were later darkened because they didn't show up on the dark green color I chose.

Now I colored and shaded the skin. I'm very happy with this stage because I love shading skin...

Now, after much color contemplation, I added in the wings and hair. You can see how much darker those highlights on the wings got.

Everything sort of started bursting with color when I finished the shirt and colored the braid. At first mom thought this was the finished stage.

After I added the background with a mixture of black and brown markers and pencils, I realized Skylar, the Character, stuck out too much, so I really darkened up the shading on the hair, wings, and clothes. This ended up helping the image because it heightened the effect of a glow coming from the middle of the picture.

And I finally added the "energy ball" with paint! After this, I waited for it to dry and added the finishing touch of a little bit of blue shading inside the white. I'm really quite pleased with the way it came out, and I hope you like it, Six!
