9.9.11 ... scrabble tile perpetual calendar

9

today i got this idea for a perpetual scrabble tile calendar using upcycled tiles, a tile rack and a mixture of letters left as is and others transformed into numbers for dates and miniature scenes for seasons. here is my start. the tiles that will have the numbers on their plain sides will spell out HAPPINESS on the reverse.

9

the rack can easily fit the month and day a two date number tiles and one scene tile or one date tile for the single digit sates, if you like, and two scene tiles. or other variations of which there are many. i will return with the first finished project very soon since i cannot leave the table like this for long. the kitties will notice and decide to do their own variation on it and that will look something like this ...

9

i shall return. what do you think of my calendar idea?

sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

8.4.11 ... hearts and a constellation bookmark

Img_2950

this morning i packaged up this sweet pair of earrings. i know they are a gift so i tossed in some hearts. i made a cute tie, too, but i didn't get a photo. the person who purchased these sent me a sweet message in with her order. you can see what goes around comes around.

Img_2958

here's the second packet. this person also sent me a lovely message in her order. this is a new take on a bookmark. i will tell her that when she cuts off the top piece where the staple is, she will have a tidy recycled bookmark. i chose this vintage constellation page because the ring motif reminds me of celestial-ness.

Img_2961

here is the reverse. hope you enjoyed it. and here's some news. scout opened an etsy shop today for her vintage finds. how cool is that? here's the link:

www.seventeenagain.etsy.com she just set it up and has one item listed. woo hoo.

sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

7.22.11 ... recycled map bookmark

Img_2006

i made this as an extra for a buyer who lives in connecticut. i placed a heart on her town. i made this using a vintage map, my sewing machine and string and yarns from my collection.

Img_2003

here's the reverse.

Img_2007

i really like the yarn and string combination.

Img_2009

i hope you all are headed into a beautiful weekend. stay cool and safe.

6.27.11 ... we love love love love our doctor

Treasury-62611

...scout had her check up today. our beyond fantastic doctor uses the word absolutely and we love the way she says it. so i made this treasury tonight. it was inspired by her. you can see it here.  she is absolutely one of the best reasons to live in austin. we are so very lucky. i hope you all have a doctor you love, too.

5.24.11 ... calling cards and packet

Img_7381

Today i finished up the loose ends of the packet heading to australia.  i made a variety of calling cards. here are my alligator bookmark calling cards.

Img_7390

here are a few of my heart tree and thank you for caring bookmark calling cards.  scout was sweet enough to come in and help me with the bookmark ties.  she is so creative.  i love the ones she made.  and...

Img_7386

... some with my house stamp.

Img_7397

i hope these donations help make a difference. i am honored to have been asked and to be taking part. it's a small world. and environment is, indeed, everything.

5.23.11 ... getting some goodies ready

Img_7365

i am working on getting together a packet of recycled art to send to australia.  i was invited to participate in a fund raising event.

Img_7371

these are a few of the items i gathered and i am making a few more small things.  i don't have much time. i was supposed to mail them out today but that just didn't happen.  tomorrow is another day.

Img_7362

most of these are my inkadilly folios.  i haven't made any - other than that cute mouse notebook - in a long time.  i miss them.  i need to make more.

Img_7354

i placed these items in the protective bags today and started on a few corner bookmarks. i started on this whale bookmark today.

Img_7357

tomorrow i will add to it and make some calling cards and soon everything will be on its way across the world.  i hope my items help them raise money.

5.11.11 ... mending my anemone

5

i needed to cover this teeny hole before it turned into something irreversibly ruinous. so i went through my trusty labels box and found the navy and pink label. i don't need that one. i just love how it looks so i added it to my task list. here is the label i chose to cover the hole...

5

i chose it because it is small, very soft and worn and has a j which can stand for me. in my mind. and, really, who else's matters?

5

so, i hand stitched it on. this is side a and here is side b...

5

if you're wondering what this is, by the way, it is my anemone. it's a protective case for my pony (iphone). i made it out of two cuffs and a neck ribbing bit from a long sleeved tie dyed t-shirt i repurposed. i love the color. and i think it looks like an anemone. it would look more like one if i hadn't accidentally sewn across the bottom. i meant to sew straight across leaving the ruffle showing on the outside which would match the top rim.but se la vie. i am used to it now. the sun was almost completely set so this last photo, which shows the finished mending and applique design.

5

i know i will enjoy it much more. i love personality in my earthly possessions and creations and this fit that paradigm already but now it is more pizzazz-y. we all need some pizzazz.

5.4.11 ... mother's day cards

Img_6577

we worked on cards today and i have photos of mine which i will share on mother's day and not before! here is scout's card for a dear friend. i know she does not have interweb access so we are safe sharing this one before it arrives in her mailbox.

Img_6576

this 'mom' once told scout about her escapades grooming - as it were - her hair stylist to achieve a hair cut she feels is worthy. so scout couldn't resist this illustration choice. we had fun making our cards. it took us most of the day.

4.29.11 ... another rubber stamp project

4

scout and i started on another stamp pair. the sun is mine. this is as far as i got because i made chicken salad and needed to get an early dinner together so she'd be well fed before rehearsal this evening. and here is hers...

4

she got one step further. i'll share the next steps as soon as we finish them. it might be a few days because her show is this weekend; two performances each day.

i hope your friday was a funday. sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

4.27.11 ... house stamp and framed ephemera

4

i worked on my house stamp this afternoon and ev made the block and attached it. tomorrow i will try it and refine it. so stay tuned. all i can say is i sure wish i could see as well as this camera can!

4

this was a project i've had in mind for quite a while but i have been hunting for the right frame. it took some time, but boy did i luck into a perfect fit. this vintage frame is one of a pair which had expensive lithographs inside. from my research on the artist, they are most likely from the 1970s or very early 1980s. anyway, i took them out and will offer them in my joonE etsy shop frameless. i cleaned them up and used this one for my project. the paper is an antique from a Boston candy and ice cream purveyor, bailey's. i've had the doily for about 10 years, wondering why i save it and carefully traipse it from house to house. it is so delicate. but now it is perfect as a gift for a good friend of mine.

4

i can't believe the mat works so beautifully, too.

4

i love how this photo came out with the tree reflection so i'm sharing it as a photographic creation. it was a gorgeous day here today. the air was dry and there was a lovely breeze and the temperature was outstanding. the mosquitoes were on vacation. now that is a miracle, folks. i enjoyed being outside. i didn't get to play piano. i will be sure to make time tomorrow. hope your day was just right for you.

4.22.2011

4.22.11 ... happy earth day to all and a napkin upcycle project

4

have you ever gone to the sound of music sing-a-long movie? well, i was working one and it is pretty hilarious. anyway, everyone gets a little brown paper lunch sack and inside there are things that go along with the film and when that part of the movie comes on everyone is supposed to use the whatever and cause an excited cheering ruckus. the little square here (you were to bring it out and wave it about when maria discovers the drapes can be made into plainclothes) that i used as an applique on my recycled dinner napkin is one of hundreds that we found all over the floor when we were cleaning up after the show. another usher and i were crazed that they were going to be thrown into the trash so we gathered them all up and i took them home with me. they are perfectly beautiful little brand new squares of 100 % cotton. there are a few different designs. this napkin is made from one large napkin. i have four of them and a year or so ago i got a brainstorm. who needs such a giant napkin? we can have four for each one and still have plenty of cloth. so i cut one into quarters and i finished the two raw edges and put a strip applique on each one and they are cute as all get out and work great.

4

all this time i've had the other three original large napkins just waiting for their transformation. today i was busy with many activities, one of which i will share with you (below), and i glanced at my clock and - holy cow- it was after 5 already. so i cut four out of one and completed one. i did not want to set up my ironing board so i just used my fingers and pins to set the new edges. isn't this pretty? wouldn't it be a sin if these were all thrown away and in a landfill right now? i don't even want to think about all the shows where my friend and i were not the house helpers and these are ditched. sigh.

4

i had too many empty bobbins and i had to break down and whip up a new batch. this i did and that egged me on (that's an easter pun, folks) to do a sewing project today. i did some mending before i made the napkin. all in all i guess it's been a pretty good day. hope yours was, too.

4.16.11 ... recycling envelope sticker flaps

Img_5570

...continued from yesterday when i told you i had a genius idea. i cannot believe i never thought of this before now. i always recycle safety envelopes and all other junk mail envelopes. what am i saying? i recycle every envelope no matter how plain or fancy it is. it's an obsessive thing. but the one part i always tossed into recycling was the flap because of the fold and the sticker edge. but yesterday i thought - hey! i can trim those off and turn them into my own stickers for my etsy packages. so here is my first batch. i will slice them into individual stickers as i go. they're easier to find in my drawer as long strips.

Img_5589

i had fun making these and i know i will be hooked now thinking up a million and one sticker themes for these silly strips. tomorrow is evan's birthday and scout has a long afternoon rehearsal and then ev has a call in the evening so we had his steak dinner tonight, the netflix film 'red' with bruce willis and more - very fun movie - and a chocolate fudge cake. we used a recipe new to us. just one out of the bible of all cookbooks - the better homes and gardens checkered stand by. love that thing. the cake is delightful.

4.11.11 ... auto antenna plug necklace

4

one day last week i found a small box with four of these inside. i don't know why i like them so much but i just do. the shape is so interesting. i love the package and the fact that they are auto antennas. so i immediately thought about making them into necklaces and, because i am struggling with the loss of our dear sweet cricket, i was unable to create anything that required a lot of thought, time, effort ... you understand, i know. so here is a simple upcycled auto antenna necklace. i may get fancier, more creative and embellish it. but, then again, i may not. i just love this thing.

4

how adorable is ernie? he's an oldie but goodie. i will list the necklace in my www.joonwalk.etsy.com shop one day soon.

3.6.11 ... getting ready for spring fair ... button making process

3

i set up a small batch of word collage buttons today. i'm really slow at this activity because i enjoy obsessing over the combinations. so these are not even glued in place yet and may change tomorrow. who knows? but i like them so far.

3

i have had these words for a long time and i have circles cut and filed by style or color. naturally, i am using recycled papers, as always.

3

these include magazine papers ...

3

... and envelopes...

3

and here's the first batch all ready for the next steps before old tess (my tecre machine) and i get to button making.

3

and there's more mixing and matching that will be waiting for me in the morning.

3

tomorrow's another day. to be continued ...

3.5.11 ... vintage postcard bookmarks

3

i am going to be in a spring fling fair here in austin on march 16th so i started thinking about what i want to bring. it's been over two years since my last show and i think i've only been in a handful in the past 10 years. they're not what they used to be. they've gone the way of weddings and college tuition - absurd. but this is a rare, small one and i am looking forward to it.

3

so today i saw my stack of old postcards and started choosing those with good graphics for slicing and got to work. these are mostly from new orleans and nearby areas. i named each bookmark and printed the names, along with my signature on the backs - after these photos were taken. i love that car and the one way sign. each one has some little piece that intrigues me.

3

i enjoyed messing around with different threads and strings for the tails.

3

i wonder how many of these places still exist? i will have to google and wiki for a while this evening. it makes me sad thinking about how wonderful these restaurants and the hotel had to be. i do hope at least one or two have survived these past 30 or 40 years since these were printed.

3

the reverses are just as interesting as the photographs. another activity we all enjoyed was looking at the photos through a magnifying glass. the details are incredible. who knew? these would make super miniature jigsaw puzzles. but, for now, they are repurposed into groovy, one-of-a-kind bookmarks.
