4.14.11 ... cloth whale bookmark and a scout cartoon

4

today i continued working on a flying housewife {www.flyinghousewife.etsy.com} letter packet. this is the upcycled bookmark i dreamed up. the whale and identification bits are from a groovy bandana i found at a thrift store years ago. the wave piece is from a lovely woman who quilts and gave my son a huge bag of scraps for me. isn't that sweet? it's all so pretty and i use those pieces all the time. the white is from a wonderful heavy duck cotton curtain i once found at - wait for it - a thrift shop.

the reverse is made from two other found fabrics. the background is from a small piece my sis gave me - didn't you, sis? and the boat is from an old toddler boy's shirt. yeah, i'm not so certain you will find one like that in any of the lame clothing stores that sadly pepper our beautiful countryside. if you visited yesterday you read that i did a few things after dark so i couldn't get photos. the art in the background here is a pastel i started last night. not that i know what i am doing, but i had a good time messing around.

my bobbin ran out half way around the edging so i switched to navy blue. i like it better with the two tone. hence, my frustration turned to gratitude for serendipitous potential angst.

i left the top thread the same royal blue. how adorable is that pilot whale anyway?

and here is scout's adorable illustration she made for one of her dance friends who surprises her with fancy socks every now and then. in extra news, i am always drawn irresistibly to old cookbooks, especially the locally produced variety. and we like to choose a few of the recipes that represent the culture of that time. tonight we had chicken strips dipped in crushed potato chips. you might want to try it. the original recipe calls for dipping the chicken in melted butter but we used buttermilk. we planned on placing a thin butter slice atop each piece - that's what we do when we use crushed cornflakes. but as i write this, we realize we forgot to do that and they were delicious. butter saved. scout made her ranch dressing to dip them in. oh yum.

sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon
