12.1.12 ... disneyland ii

i know this is a month overdue.
but here i am, as promised.
making the collages turned out to be
bit of a challenge and life kept getting in the way.
better late than never.
i do like them.
hope you enjoy them, too.

evan had to have red velvet cake.
it was delicious.

i love the cleanliness and the
wonderfully designed and
individualized trash and recycling bins.

disney california is just
another spoonful of genius.
love it there.
we feel fortunate that we happened
to visit just before the tim burton
frankenweenie display left.

as you might expect,
it is incredible.

yes we are disnerds.
these photos are from our second visit.

we've since gone another five times.

can't wait to go back.

and i'll return at some
point with another plethora
of photographic memories.

and this is before my new iphone
arrives.  i'll be a mad woman with
tha camera once it is in my
hot little disney lovin' hands.

sweet dreams, everyone.
thanks for stopping by.
until next time.
happiness to you.
from me.
with heart.

Freestyle Quilting

I have been thinking about 'painting' with thread. No forethought or planning. Just start somewhere and doodle until something comes to me and go with it. This is with the sewing machine foot down - not in darning mode. Today was a busy day so I decided to try a tiny sample for my TaD. I love this little thing. It is three layers of heavy duty {theater use} cotton muslin. The photos show both front and reverse views. It's just a few minutes old and already a bevy of ideas are circling around in my brain for what this might become. I'd love to hear yours. Have a wonderful evening.

It's a great day for America, everybody. Yes it is.

Adding a Touch of Silly to the Mundane

Batteries drive me crazy.
Maybe it's just at my house but I
exist in a world filled with ambiguous
batteries and equally confused fellow family members
whose names will remain a mystery in order
to protect the innocently adored.

Yesterday we had yet another incident
of 'Are they or aren't they?'
complicated by another fine
crazy making housewife condition
known as:
Is it the flashlight or is it the batteries?

Well, I've been around the block
a time or two so I know how to
make a U Turn and pass the buck.

I leave the flashlight empty.
I take the possible batteries,
and in a stroke of silly genius
I rifle through the recycling basket
and viola!
Ambiguous labeling.

Somehow I just felt a lot better after this.
Silly is as silly does.
Do something silly today.
Come back and share your story with us.
Until next time.

Upcycled PlaceMats ~ Personal History Theme

Jon Cody's Placemat ~ Close Up Views

I recently created these two placemats for the newlyweds. I based the design on some vintage
placemats we own and love. Everything about these has a memory connection including the fact that Jon Cody & Val have dined on ours many times and now that we live so far apart I wanted them to have a copycat version. I hope they'll enjoy thousands of happy meals with them and remember the good times and meals we shared together.

Val's Placemat ~ Close Up View

States Where They Have Lived
Are The Center Double Square
Jon Cody {above}
Colorado.Virginia.Oregon. New Hampshire.

Val grew up in New Hampshire
in the Upper Valley Area
which encompasses a section of Vermont,
which is, fortuitously, on this piece.
She & Jon Cody met there
in 10th grade. They've
been together ever since
and their current home, Massachusetts,
joins Vermont on Val's mat.

All of the squares were chosen for a reason, too. For example, the kitty pieces are scraps from the handmade mitts I made for them last year. They had just gotten their first kitty, Mr. Boo Radley. Notice that Jon Cody's kitty is manly. Val's has hearts. :) The pale aqua neon lizard squares were incorporated because they were once part of Jon Cody's favorite shorts when he was a wee spud.

All of the fabrics are leftover
from other projects and are 100% cotton.
I had a lot of fun making these prototypes.
I am going to make some extras for us next.

Hope you enjoyed the post.
Thanks for stopping by.
Until next time...

FriDaY FuNDaY ~ Pai Natal Silliness

A week of reflection. I am finding it very hard to grasp that the first month of the year is gone. As you see, we still have some seasonal storing tasks before us. Scout & I thought my readers would find this teeny nesting doll set as delightful as we do. I wish I could have gotten a close up of the painting on that smallest little dot there on the end but the light wasn't in my little corner of the sky today. Some very thoughtful new friends gave these to Scout a few years ago, not knowing that she does have a small <--- no pun intended, nesting doll collection. These will give us a laugh every year, without fail.

I don't plan on having a video clip every Friday. It's purely coincidence that one of our favorite recent laugh fests happens to be John Malkovich reading Twas the Night Before Christmas on SNL. Hope you'll enjoy it. This one is about 5 minutes long. Be sure no little ones are watching with you. I believe in keeping the spirit of Santa Claus alive and circling the globe.

Seriously, how adorable are these cuties? Hope wherever you are and whatever you're doing we've added a little to your Friday Funday.

ps. That's Scout's first ever pysanky egg. She made it at the Maker Faire.

Unless you are a Man WARNING! ... Revealed

Well, here we have a sample of my silverware collection. These beauties and funky vintage airline spoons, forks and knives are what we use every day. I'm hard pressed to choose a favorite and love having an eclectic array to choose from depending on my meal and my mood. There are many more and I am constantly on the lookout. Below is a close up. You can see the lovely and groovy design elements that attract me to this table setting style.

And now ~~~ The story revealed. What was in the: WARNING! Do not open unless you are a man' Pottery Barn box? Here it is: Evan's silverware! Kristoffer recalled hearing Evan joke about the lightweight feminine silverware he dines with each day and surprised us all on Christmas morning a few years ago with this gift for Evan only ...the ultimate 'MAN' cutlery. Steak and potatoes anyone? :)

Please give three rousing cheers for Scout, who so kindly polished every piece you see in these photos (go Crest toothpaste) for her dear old MoM. Thank you, Scout! Hope you all enjoyed the guessing game. We certainly did. Thanks so much for all your fine submissions. I'd love to know your favorite piece(s) here. So please feel free to post a comment. I'll be back soon with more groovy things I've found while packing for the great Austin Road Trip! Countdown is almost here! We should be leaving on August 15th! Tempus Fugit. ciao for now.

PS. More photos uploaded to my FLICKR page. If you are a silverware lover like me, come take a peek.

PPS. My flying housewife shop is on hiatus for August but joonbeam remains open with a Cricket Meow SALE section from now until ??? Mention 'MAN FORK' in the message to seller space and I will take an addition 10% off your order ~ this includes the entire shop; excludes shipping. I will stay open as long as I can until we leave. Watch my shop announcement for hiatus date at which point this sale has ended. Thank you friends!

Kay, Theo & Scout ~ Best Friends Forever

Scout is on her way through the driving snowstorm to spend the night with the MacPhail family. We met them, serendipitously, through a home school connection. We had just moved to Belmont. What can I say? It was love at first sight. What a great family and wonderful friends. Alas, this September, we moved three miles away. Our Wednesday afternoon walk to their house came to an end. That was sad. But hark! They recently sold their house! They were on a mission to find a home quickly. According to legend, the house search was somewhat predicated on its distance to 3 Plymouth Street, Arlington, MA. Or, more specifically, the locale of one Scout Wilkinson. How sweet is that? No greater compliment I say. As you can see by the photographic evidence above, this friendship is officially documented in the Mutual Admiration Society.

Aren't we the lucky ones, though? Stay warm, friends. ox
