5.31.11 ... map bookmark

Img_7891

today i did make a lot of progress on my ongoing project. meanwhile, i had four packages to get out in the mail and here are some extras i made for my etsy shop supporters. i appreciate them and enjoy creating things just for them. the map bookmark is headed to the area seen on the map.

Img_7902

i really enjoyed the way this bookmark tail turned out.

Img_7906

i sent along some of my handmade stickers because this person purchased a collage i made using pieces from the same discarded book. i hope she enjoys that little surprise. my ongoing project should be completed tomorrow. but, you never can tell. at any rate, i will be here with something. today completes my 5th month of accomplishing a creation and blog post every single day of 2011. i hope i can keep going. i am at a hard point right now. i am losing my will power. thanks for taking a peek. my determination will see me through.

sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

5.30.11 ... the great wait ...

1today

i worked on my project from yesterday again today but i am not finished with it yet. i am realizing it is much more time intensive than i first imagined. so, while we wait for that photo, i once again offer one from another time. these pins are a collage art - recycled, naturally - project. when they sold, this is how i sent them along on their way. i will work hard to complete the ongoing project. it's really nothing earth shattering. i am simply slow. but i enjoy myself so that's how it will be.

God Bless America and all our service men and women.

5.29.11 ... scout's graduation card creation

Img_7602

i have always wanted one of these sticker kits but never could see my way to paying full price. then i miraculously spied this one, still sealed and as new, at the thrift bin store which charges by the pound, so basically, this was free. i loved that it was a washington d.c. theme but had no idea what i would ever do with it. but the next day i put two and two together and now i know it was a sign that i found it in all that crazy chaos. so i shared my basic idea with scout and she created this fabulous card. i am sharing it today because val has seen it now so we're safe on the surprise end of things, and because my project for today is a two day affair and i don't want to post photos until it is complete. so come on back tomorrow for that one and i hope you enjoy this one as much as i did.

Img_7603

love it. we just finished watching the 1941 film 'meet john doe' and loved it. it is my first gary cooper film. no idea how that is possible but there you have it. it's on netflix instant and we highly recommend it.

ps.  i just learned that scout wrote a review on her tumbler and it is so enjoyable!  you really should read it.  you will smile.  i guarantee it.  go HERE

5.28.11 ... my flowers have grown - a recycled surprise

Img_6855

today scout and i worked on a complex project that isn't ready to be posted visually yet so i am taking this opportunity to share this one from a week or so ago.

Img_6856

it can be a large fold over bookmark or a stand alone little art decor piece. it's constructed out of a discarded 1960s book illustration, a ledger paper piece and some manila card stock i found at a thrift store.

Img_6857

i had fun with it.

Img_6860

i placed one of my favorite stamp messages on the back. because i love abe and i love friendships. how's your holiday weekend shaping up so far?

5.26.11 ... record box repair for reuse - pleasantly!

5

i found the record box irresistible. it was apart and the records were who knows where. i just had to take it and fix it up so i can use it for some storage. the red sticker is killing me. too funny. here's what it looked like before i repaired it. ...

5

the bottom needed all four corners taped back, too. i can't wait to choose what will go inside. i know i will smile every time i see it.

i don't waste much. i love making hearts out of my tiniest scraps of paper. i use these in so many projects.

5

here are the scraps i used today.

5

and here is the little pile of hearts i made from those few bits.

5

i am sure i'll be sharing a project incorporating these one day soon. so stay tuned.

Img_7381

Today i finished up the loose ends of the packet heading to australia.  i made a variety of calling cards. here are my alligator bookmark calling cards.

Img_7390

here are a few of my heart tree and thank you for caring bookmark calling cards.  scout was sweet enough to come in and help me with the bookmark ties.  she is so creative.  i love the ones she made.  and...

Img_7386

... some with my house stamp.

Img_7397

i hope these donations help make a difference. i am honored to have been asked and to be taking part. it's a small world. and environment is, indeed, everything.

5.23.11 ... getting some goodies ready

Img_7365

i am working on getting together a packet of recycled art to send to australia.  i was invited to participate in a fund raising event.

Img_7371

these are a few of the items i gathered and i am making a few more small things.  i don't have much time. i was supposed to mail them out today but that just didn't happen.  tomorrow is another day.

Img_7362

most of these are my inkadilly folios.  i haven't made any - other than that cute mouse notebook - in a long time.  i miss them.  i need to make more.

Img_7354

i placed these items in the protective bags today and started on a few corner bookmarks. i started on this whale bookmark today.

Img_7357

tomorrow i will add to it and make some calling cards and soon everything will be on its way across the world.  i hope my items help them raise money.

5.22.2011

5.22.11 ... a sweet recycled packaging idea

Img_7321

i found this giant texas wall map at a thrift store. it is laminated and cost me next to nothing so i decided to take it to see if i could use it as an envelope for large items. and i sold some vintage sheet music and this worked out perfectly. what i didn't count on, but am especially thrilled with, is that because of the laminate, the package creates an air pocket - since it doesn't fold perfectly flat. so this is wonderful because it protects the contents even better without any extra material , time or effort. i will be using the rest of this map with enthusiasm. now i have to keep an eye out for more. i created this on friday but i saved the photo for today. i did some mending but think this is a much more interesting creation to share with you - as much as i do love my mending. you know i have a thing for it.

5.21.11 ... recycled panel art

Img_7333

i was looking through a discarded peanuts collection book last week when i got this idea to make an accordion fold book out of it, but today i changed my mind and made a two sided panel art instead. the brown paper is salvaged from a vintage library book cover wrapper. here is the full panel side one ...

Img_7325

and here is side two ...

Img_7330

you can see the print on the book jacket liner.

Img_7327

i used colored pencil on the black and white comics.

Img_7329

and outlined each one with a different color that is used in the panels.

Img_7342

i love this message and think it applies to this project --- anything you see as art is art. have a beautiful sunday.

5.20.2011

5.20.11 ... puzzles and buttons

Img_7307

here is yesterday's eyeglass case with its vintage button touches.

Img_7319

it was rainy today so taking photos was a challenge.

Img_7275

this morning ev and i went to the bin goodwill and i found all of these map puzzle pieces scattered pell mell. i collected them and then ev came and helped. i wish we had accomplished finding every one but i am still in shock that we found all but three. although, as scout said, they could have been missing before the puzzle was even donated. scout and i had a good time piecing it together and then doing the reverse side, below...

Img_7291

the illustrations are adorable. i also found a ravensberg outer space puzzle - 200 pieces in its box and i did not count them there. we put that together and every piece is there so that was fun. scout made chicken marsala, german noodles and fresh green beans for dinner. oh. my. gravy. so delicious. ev is making gin's peanut butter cookies and we're then going to watch another ally mcbeal. hope you all are enjoying a lovely evening.

5.19.11 ... upcycled reading glasses case

5

on monday, at long last, i found some reading glasses. in fact, because i found them and because they were 4.99 or 7.99 instead of their retail price of $45 or $25, i got four pair in hopes of not getting myself into the predicament i have been in for the past 18 months --- with only one pair that is too big and constantly falls off. and drives me crazy. i started making cases today and here is case number one. it is not completely finished here. i added some groovy buttons tonight and will take another photo for tomorrow's post.

5

it is made out of an old pair of pinstripe jeans leg and pajamas that had been patched before finally giving out. i wanted to use them because the fabric is perfect for a safe, soft lining. since i love my patches, i trimmed one out and added it on as a front pocket.

5

below is a photo of the liner and pocket pajamas source. the patch that became the pocket is in the upper right corner - ish.

5

i also made this vintage bird image playing card bookmark for a customer and included it in with the other goodies seen here...

5

the papers are a selection of my handmade stickers.

5.17.11 ... projects in progress and a serendipity story

Img_7189

this is a photo of a few project ideas that i imagined this afternoon. they are projects in the making and all need multiple steps, some of which i began today. stay tuned ...

Img_7211

here is a story: we were at the blue bin thrift center the other day and two older gentlemen were rummaging through a sweet vintage plastic sewing case. i always look for anything sewing related. those sights are rare and this was the first i was seeing that day - and we'd been there quite a while and were wearing down. and scout was hungry. as hard as it is to see something slip out of my grasp, i will not interfere with someone who has found something first. so i waited for what seemed like an eternity while they rifled through the box, dumped out the contents and rifled through those. i am still curious about what they could be looking for, but i am sure i'll never know. when they had dumped out the last few things and set aside the box on the other side of themselves, i asked if they wanted it and they happily passed it over to me.

scout and i started looking through the chaos and finding small oddments of interest. one was this fantastically groovy miniature sewing machine screwdriver - my favorite find of that search - and one was a tiny silver thimble. one of the men must have noticed that we picked it up and he held out this red one to me. i thanked him but didn't look closely at it. it was so tiny and the print was miniscule. i forgot all about it until i started going through everything later on. i still couldn't read what was on it - even with my glasses - so i got my magnifying glass and walked over toward the light of the window. i couldn't believe my eyes when i saw that it read lewis - one of our nicknames for scout is louis (close enough) but the real shocker was the 222. she was born at 2:22 and it has been a favorite and special number to us for almost 17 years now. how crazy is this? i love it. i love that it came my way because i was respectful and through the kindness of a stranger. it was meant to be.

it's a sign.

5.16.11 ... cheese enchiladas

Img_7081

i got these this far --- and all before 11 AM. woo hoo.

Img_7076

aren't they pretty?

Img_7073

on mondays we are out for the afternoon and dinner is always a tricky task. i sure wish i would be organized and compelled to do this more often.

Img_7086

it was lovely coming home, pulling this out of the fridge and popping it in the oven to bake while we got our house legs back and watched some dancing with the bananas as i call it. i even managed to grab this picture out back before the sun disappeared. the enchiladas were exceptional. if i do say so myself. and i do. adios.
