3.12.11 ... visiting the sketchbook project

we've been looking forward to attending the traveling sketchbook project exhibit as it made its first stop here in austin. it was not what we expected.  but, as we so often do, we made lemonade out of lemons and i did get to photograph scout at the event. here you see scout with her card.

 we managed to get scout's book - on the left - and a random choice. you could only see two at a time. and there was no time to see more than that. at least not for us.

it was fun seeing scout's bio in the adorable owl pocket.

it came out exactly as we'd worded it.

on the way back to our car we enjoyed the gorgeous, warm and sunny afternoon. i snapped a few photos...

and i love this half tree but the composition of this photo came out surprisingly appealing to me. not feeling well this evening and it is late so ttfn.

Scissor Case & TeXaS Applique Mend

Recently I stumbled upon this fabulous handmade work apron. I have been planning to make one for myself. Once again, procrastination pays off. This is beautifully constructed and has been loved and lovingly cared for ~ and all for 1.99. Irresistible. So now I tool around the house with my pony {iphone} in one pocket, my pen and paper in one and my trusty scissors in the center. I don't want the scissors to stress the fabric so I made this little slip case for them. It's made from hand dyed viscose I purchased from my Etsy friend { www.sassalynne.etsy.com } Scout was my model {above}. Today we received a goodie package from our friend, Stacy, in Hawaii. She included that gorgeous bracelet for Scout who is thrilled. It's perfect for her. {Stacy is beautiful and so are her creations found HERE at stacysdesigns88 }

I also did some mending today. This is my favorite. It's our bedspread which is pretty heavy weight and was a real bear to accomplish. Just finished it this evening { I did laundry for 8 hours today. } so I could only grab this picture below the lamp. I adore this fabric and this patch will always remind us of our time here in Austin. Sweet dreams... until tomorrow... It's a great day for America, everybody. Yes it is.

ps. Craig is performing here this weekend. Wish we could see his show. But alas, that is not in the budget. :)

Fine Art for Pennies Conquers Modern Technology ~ A Dilemma Solved Tutorial

I found this wonderful Charles Prendergast quality print poster for $1 and have been transporting it and beautifying our prospective temporary homes for quite a few years. It's been through the packing and unpacking process and gained a bit of character but I saw some

when I was faced with this decorating challenge...

EEGADS!

This fuse box adorns a wall in our bedroom.
That's a new one on me. And, as most of you know,
I've lived in 30something+ residences now.
Try as we might, we just couldn't seem to match up
a proper artful disguise for this eyesore.

Idea

One day, I pulled out the poster.
It was exactly the proper height,
but since the fuse box did not offer a flat wall surface
we needed to add cardboard and a hanging device.
We did that, but it just wasn't sturdy enough
to maintain a steadfast cover.
Thinking cap once again...

The tools of the trade.

Then I had my AHA! moment.
And this is what happened next...

New Improved Idea

I turned my cardboard backed, beautiful poster scene into a triptyche.
And I solved the sturdy hanging challenge
with one of my favorite recycle friendly inventions ~
the ever simple and always perfect velcro dot.

Have I mentioned I am mad for velcro?

First, I attached the velcro squares, both halves of each,
to the fuse box corners.
Next, I peeled away the protective pieces
and centered the art work over the fuse box,
pressed and viola!

I am a Happy Woman

I now have two perfectly sized scenes to interchange at will
and one smaller one for another use.
Evan has had the unfortunate need to access the fuse box
one morning at 4 AM.
The lone cheery aspect of which, he reported at coffee time,
was his joy at how perfectly easy it was to remove and reattach
my ingenius box cover.
So there you have it.
$1 has never been better spent ~ even for me!

Sharing Beauty on a Sunday Morning

Hello Friends. Just found THIS in the NYTimes online and it is a wonderful, inspiring respite to those who appreciate true art. If you love photography, you'll love the feature.

And, how does Robert Downey Jr. fit into all this? Well, not that he needs a reason to fit in anywhere, but he is featured in the presentation. And, complete coincidence: I am listing this set in my joonbeam shop this morning. Just the pinbacks, ladies. The photo stays with me.

How's your Sunday? Well, I believe it may have just improved significantly. :)

FriDaY FuNDaY ~ propriety

When I taught second grade, I nicknamed the days of the week. For now, I'll leave you guessing on the first four. Friday Funday was my favorite because we stepped outside of the box and had an interdisciplinary creative explosion. The results of these activities amazed me, inspired me and taught me a lot about being true to my self and trusting my intuition. I loved displaying our projects at the end of the day. It was always a delightful surprise. Like little bursts of genius were sprinkled at my Reebok'd feet & bloomed like magic. Those Fridays are responsible for most of my favorite teaching memories. I wonder if the children remember them.

We've all been under the weather for the past few weeks and Scout is of the mind it's a grand scheme to force me to slow down a half step. Perhaps that is how this idea had a chance to nudge its way in the door. On Fridays I will share the little things that bring us joy and inspiration. I hope you'll find yourself smiling, touched and inspired, too. It's Friday. Let's have some FUN!

Ingredients: One favorite film, two weeks of exasperated sighs, inspiration, fate, vintage vocabulary cards, laminating machine, heart hole punch, ball chain

Makes: This fabulous recycled necklace with special meaning. The word propriety is front and center in one of her favorite What's Up Doc? film quotes. Judy Maxwell {Barbra Streisand} defines it a little differently than our Vis-Ed card. Visit THIS CLIP to see what I mean. The clip is 9 minutes, but, never fear, you will be rewarded {and excused} with comic genius in a mere 2:45 total. Trust me. It's delightful.
