8.4.11 ... hearts and a constellation bookmark

this morning i packaged up this sweet pair of earrings. i know they are a gift so i tossed in some hearts. i made a cute tie, too, but i didn't get a photo. the person who purchased these sent me a sweet message in with her order. you can see what goes around comes around.

here's the second packet. this person also sent me a lovely message in her order. this is a new take on a bookmark. i will tell her that when she cuts off the top piece where the staple is, she will have a tidy recycled bookmark. i chose this vintage constellation page because the ring motif reminds me of celestial-ness.

1.4.11 ... packaging experiments

i have a lot of fun with my packaging as some of you know. i've featured many on my (joonbeam) blog and some of you have received packages from me. today i worked on a triple order and took the opportunity to fiddle around with a semi formulaic approach. no two can ever be the exact same but i do need to make it a little easier on myself because i spend way too much time on preparing my packages for the mail. it's very nice when people appreciate it, but i know there are just as many times when the receiver could care less and here i put so much time, effort and heart into it. which i love to do so therein lies the dilemma. so maybe a compromise can work. here is what i came up with. it's a take-off on the matchbook. if any of you remember those? :)

sadly, it was rainy all day and these are low light pictures so i apologize for the quality. hopefully you can get an idea. i had fun. that's always a good sign. by the way, the bookmarks are something new i started recently. i made these today. i love old postcards and a lot of them actually look better to me sliced into recycled bookmarks. what do you think? i hope the buyer will like her little extras.

the save the whale stamp bookmark was made using the same tagboard - manila folder paper - as the matchbooks. i found this package of paper at the thrift store the other day for a dollar. i don't know why i have never seen it in the stationery stores before. i know i will want more once i run out. i love the stuff. it's so perfect for my earth friendly theme. the fam is awaiting my attention for dessert and west wing so ... thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

ps. i am learning this method of blogging via emailing posterous and it takes some getting used to and tweaking. also, the challenge of blogging every day is a little daunting. but i am determined to improve in all aspects of this venture. thanks for sharing the journey of ineptness with me. please hang in there.

1.1.11 ... and the kindness of strangers

a new beginning ...



i want to create and post every day this year. without any more structure than that one goal. so here we are starting together on day one.one.one one
i recently created these two recycled corner bookmarks for a kind stranger who bought a cookbook of mine. i had consigned it at a local church run thrift shop and this woman found photographs inside that looked important. she called the shop. the shop called me. i gave permission for the woman to call me. she did. she described the photos, which were vintage family snapshots. i did not believe they were mine but agreed she should send them along to me. when they arrived i was shocked to find they were, indeed, family photos including one {original} of my father at age 18 in his army uniform during world war ii. i have no idea how they wound up in that cookbook or how i missed that they were in there. but i am very glad a thoughtful stranger purchased my book. i hope she will enjoy the little thank you note, my recommendation for a favorite recipe in that volume and these kitchen-y bookmarks. i enjoy creating these and had a brainstorm yesterday... more on that another day. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart.  ox joon

NoVeMBeR NeWS: MoViNG. FLaNNeL DaY ReMiNDeR. ReCYCLeD ART.

How have you all been?

November is almost gone and

I haven't had a chance to blog

as I wished I would.  Sigh.

It's been a bit nutty here.

After a ridiculously extended search

we finally found a new place

to live.  We move on Sunday.

We're looking forward to

the new adventures.

We'll be in another Austin

neighborhood so it

will seem like a bit of 

a new world.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch,

Scout is enjoying dance and

her holiday show rehearsals.

And guess what?

She had her first ever test.

In her life.

In her ASL class.

She earned a 97% and

a certificate.  She will

begin 201 in January.

And she is participating

in NaNoWriMo

{National Novel Writing Month}

and she's on task!  

Yes, ladies and gents,

I am telling you that

Scout has written 

40,000 WORDS.

She's well on her way to 

the monthly goal of 50,000.

Quite an achievement

for a 16 year old.

I need to remind you all

that even though we will

be moving on Sunday,

it is the third annual

FLANNEL DAY!

Be sure to celebrate.

Catch Up

I haven't posted my Friday, Saturday and Sunday TADs because they are Valentines. I have a few others to post from the latter part of last week. Perhaps I will put them on my blog and supply a link to it here. Anyway, here are some examples of what I've been up to. This first one is actually the only Valentine I didn't send. I will be ahead for next year. :)

This one is a bookmark. I made it for Scout, my daughter. One of her nicknames is Louis and a long time ago I found this little magazine illustration of Louisiana and I cut it down to Louis and saved it. Naturally I forgot about it. One day this week I swear this bit floated across the air from somewhere on my shelves to right before me as I looked for something else. Well, the rest is a bit of a story, too, but here it is ~ views of both sides. I laminated it after I took these photos. My light is still poor. I look forward to the return of the sunshine.

Days 9 and 10

Hi Creators. Hope everyone is warm and dry. I didn't get to post yesterday. I did a lot but can't post pictures until next week since everything is a surprise at the moment. I can show you this envelope ~ it isn't much but there's a story behind it you might enjoy. Late one freezing cold night Scout spied this fantastic 1960s castro convertible red couch on the curb. Long story short, we asked, yes it was for the trash men, yes she'd be thrilled if we could use it, it had been in her family since it was new. It is HEAVY. We finally managed to get it into the old volvo wagon(yeah for Isabella Rosalini. What? You don't name your cars?) and got it home. We have now lugged it through 2,000 miles and two more moves. It's great. Anyway, I managed to write down the address and when Valentine's Day came along, I sent a thank you/update/Valentine from our family, complete with an adorable photo from Christmas with our little family cutie patooties propped up on the couch! A few days later, I saw someone run up to our porch and run back to a car. A while later, inside our mail drop was a handmade valentine from our couch angel. Needless to say, I sent another homemade card last year and at Easter received a lovely postcard note ~ the Boston Swan Boats. (We moved here from MA.)

The recycled corner bookmark (below) is one I whipped up today to include in an etsy order package. Everything else I made today is under wraps for now. Ciao. It's a great day for America, everybody. Yes it is.

Fannie Farmer Rejuvenation

Anyone who knows me even a smidgen knows I love thrift shops. Here's a perfect example of a find that keeps me going back for more. It seems impossible that I, a 30+ year cookbook collector, have never run across a perfect~for~me copy of this classic. Well, on second thought, when you consider my criteria, it's not quite as impossible to believe.
There's always more to my stories, isn't there?

Vintage, classic, well loved cookbooks in good condition for a reasonable price are rare. This one was $3.50. The price was right. The cover is sad, but disposable. I use my cookbooks. I don't need the cover. Besides, the book is nice looking on its own. Although I do love that font, and the design, and all the groovy blurbs. sigh....
Wait a minute...

...My trusty paper cutter & scissors and I get to work. Before too long, I have salvaged 10 pieces of the book jacket and prepared them for the next step ~ my laminating machine.

Once laminated and trimmed, they are beautiful, preserved & useful recycled bookmarks for my wonderful new find. And wonderful it is. Check out this page: Watermelon Cocktail. Marmalade Souffle. And my favorite ~ Banana Whip. I don't even have to make any of these to enjoy this treasure.

Look at these graphics. By the way, this is a 1964 copy of the 1959 TENTH EDITION. I couldn't find an available copy on Amazon to compare values. But, as you can see, there is not going to be another one just like mine anyway.

Here they are. Aren't they too wonderful for words? I love it even more now.

New etsy shop!

I opened my second etsy shop last night! It was a long time in the works. I made my banner all by myself. No small feat. Photoshop and I have communication style differences. It's not the banner I envisioned but I like it a lot and at least it got me up and flying. Speaking of flying, here is my little airplane avatar for the housewife! How adorable is this?



I had a sale already within the first hour of listing so I am very pleased and hoping it isn't a one time fluke! Hey, life is a risk. I'm not always big on jumping off the cliff, but I believe in this and it is something I enjoy naturally so I am following my heart.
