9.17.11 ... recycled postcard bookmarks

9

i received this postcard in 1999 from a dear friend who was in paris.

9

it's been on the brink of becoming something new many, many times since then.

9

but today it happened.

9

now the joy it has brought to me will be spread to others.

9

i love both of the yarn/threads used for these tails. i hope they last a long time. i have no idea when i will stumble upon two more like these.

sweet dreams, everyone. thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

8.15.11 ... geometric design playing card bookmark

Img_4379

I found this vintage deck of cards recently and i was really drawn to their unusual design. i have many animal, flower and bucolic scene designed cards but this one is very funky, isn't it? i had fun making this bookmark. i chose this card because the book i sold is an old algebra text and this seems 'mathy' to me.

Img_4380

made in the u s a. cannot beat that. sure hope we can get back to a lot more of that one day.

Img_4381

but until then let's all support recycled and vintage consumerism. hope your monday was a good one.

8.2.11 ... heart shaped tortilla and a bookmark

8

so i was making my flour tortillas today and look what happened when i started this one. quickly snapped a photo before it was transformed and lost. my ephemeral heart.

8

also made this bookmark out of an old european postcard. love the way it turned out. simple is sometimes enough. hope your day was a beautiful one.

ps. my joonE shop was featured in etsy finds today. how fun. www.joonE.etsy.com

7.30.11 ... flower bookmark

Img_2317

hello friends! i was up early this morning and made this little sweetheart to go along with a flowery item. i enjoyed combining doodling with my coffee time.

Img_2319

i used some new colored pencils i found yesterday at fred. they are actually vintage and so much nicer than the new ones. they were all sharpened, too! it was a very cool find because they are the brand i use. but a lot more colors than i have because i can only get one or two at a time and was adding slowly. this find was 23 pencils! woo hoo.

Img_2315

this is a section of the recycled card i made to go along with the purchase.

Img_2320

have a lovely sunday. i'll be back with another edition so don't go too far.

7.27.11 ... a simple little piglet bookmark

1piglet
i made this yesterday as part of a pooh magnets sale (in my joonbeam shop) extra surprise. isn't it sweet? the illustration is from a 1947 edition of an a a milne collection. that's all for tonight. i did start another project today but no photos. i was clipping from magazines. this is much cuter.

7.22.11 ... recycled map bookmark

Img_2006

i made this as an extra for a buyer who lives in connecticut. i placed a heart on her town. i made this using a vintage map, my sewing machine and string and yarns from my collection.

Img_2003

here's the reverse.

Img_2007

i really like the yarn and string combination.

Img_2009

i hope you all are headed into a beautiful weekend. stay cool and safe.

7.3.11 ... italian dictionary ephemera upcycling

Img_0807

this was one of my many projects for today. scout salvaged these from the dictionary whose cover you see beneath them. added my own italia colors accents and will turn them into buttons and magnets for my joonbeam shop.

Img_0812

so darn cute, eh?

Img_0793

i had fun with them. i also made a strawberry shortcake cake - sponge style. and we went to see the film buck this afternoon. loved it. before we left i got this suitcase prepared for my very first local pick up! i made these bookmarks from vintage clue game cards. these are my first from those cards.

Img_0788

after we got home i did some mending and worked on rearranging my art room shelves a bit in a valiant attempt to make some more space. we shall see how that turns out. i made a pot of pinto beans and ham to slow cook overnight. all in all, it was quite a productive day. oh! i almost forgot. my watch repair (yesterday's post) turned out fabulously. i forgot to get a photo. will try to remember tomorrow.
ev will be back with the whipping cream soon so hasta la vista, baby. enjoy your holiday.

God bless America.

6.24.11 ... beagle bookmark

6

i saw this on my art table while i was attempting to clear it off for some sewing. i never did get around to the sewing but i did a lot of useful organizing and i made this little bookmark. i never heard of dogopoly but apparently it exists. i nabbed this card from a fred visit last week. can't resist my beagle.

6

i know this will make me smile when i use it.

6

this is a vintage package preparation. i rolled up a little brightly colored 1960s fabric scrap and tied a little string around it and tossed a handful of my miniature hearts inside before wrapping it all up in pretty tissue paper and stickers.

6.09.2011

6.9.11 ... sweet hearts and eeyore

6

today i designed these little scrap fabric heart bookmarks. they consist of two coordinating fabrics with a white piece in between. the ribbons are yarn based and i added an extra square of white fabric to that section so that the yarn is between two pieces on both sides. i had fun making these spur of the moment little recycled treats.

6

scout found the mint green piece at 'fred' as we call the bin thrift. and, look, it has heart shaped designs! the floral piece is a vintage cotton tie piece. all of these fabrics are 100% cotton. it's the only way to sew, ladies and gents.

6

the piece seen in the first photo and the center heart shown here are from a designer sample. i've had it for years.

6

last, but never least, is this cute pin back i made out of a discarded children's book illustration. this is a surprise for one of my repeat customers. what did you do today? time for my home made chocolate silk pudding that ev just brought out.

5.02.2011

5.2.11 ... recycled bookmarks

5

here's something new that flashed in my brain --- combining vintage film stills with a common children's book to create an interesting bookmark design.

5

i like it. this is the reverse.

5

these are all extra surprises for joonE orders going out tomorrow. this one is for a person who mentioned she loves bluebirds.

5

i used that old suess dictionary and a safety envelope turned inside out.

5

and here is one of my mixed media whale stamp corner bookmarks for another buyer.

4.13.2011

4.13.11 ... orange juice on ice is nice

4

do you remember that song from midnight cowboy? today i created a number of things. i snapped a few quick photos of this project before the sun went down.

4

i made this pair of bookmarks from vintage playing cards. they were promotional for the orange juice council. a few of the cards in the deck are not perfect so i needed to find a way to upcycle them because, honestly, how cool are they? the graphics are amazing. love them.

4

they don't make them like this anymore. that is for sure.

4

they are fun and i enjoyed making them. sometimes the simple things are just as satisfying as the more complex projects. that is the case - for me - with these.

3.14.2011

3.14.11 ... display tower and einey's birthday

3

on wednesday i will be in a spring fair and i have been thinking and thinking of an easy and space saving way to display my items. it is quite a challenge because my table will be quite small. i came up with this wooden tower idea and when i was preparing to try it out i ran into the glitch that the one panel - which is actually the box top but becomes a side - needed to be fastened to the other piece. so i got out some trusty rubber brands and they worked great.

3

i never dreamed of using them for yet another purpose and look how great this will be. i originally thought of using little rolled up pieces of tape on the backs of the cards. but this is so much better. tomorrow i will make more cards and put my jewelry and pins on them. and voila' - i'll have a display tower. and recycled - just the way i like everything.

3

and i can utilize all four sides for my pins, jewelry and recycled corner bookmarks.

3

this view includes one of my favorite einstein quotes: imagination is more important than knowledge. and it's his birthday today. did you all celebrate by using your brains? do tell.

3

i'm still under the weather so this tower made me happy. now we'll see what else i come up with tomorrow. i wish i felt better but it will just have to be what it will be. i'm sure we'll enjoy the day regardless of my organizational status. time for one last cup of tea tonight.

3.07.2011

3.7.11 ... eeyore and friends recycled bookmark

3

i didn't get anywhere near the buttons i started yesterday. who knows where the time goes? not me. but there it went. i did create this serendipitous bookmark today and that was fun. i love it and hope the recipient will too.

3

it is going along with a purchase of four vintage book illustration magnets. i rifled through the remainder of that file and this was the one and only piece with eeyore so i got lucky.

3

the green pieces are from a paint color sample. they cover some print on the recycled piece of card stock. then i added a few colored pencil touches. i hope to get back to the word collage buttons tomorrow.

2.23.2011

2.23.11 ... einstein . save the whale . mini idea book

i was making circles - not to be confused with going in circles which i do everyday so that goes without saying - and i thought about albert's birthday coming up in a couple of weeks and started messing around with two of my einey stamps. i have another one i did not get to experiment < --- {a true einey term} with today.  then i had a stack of envelopes waiting for me to cut them into bookmark corners and strips for circles...

...and a piece of junk mail that had two pages with this beautiful ocean blue color. so i made some stamps for future stickers and some circles just to have for backgrounds although the one that says 'of art' i will use as is.

and here is everything ...

...this is my collection for today. and for tomorrow, i started making a cover for this old S.O.G. with P.O.P book. remember those? 'silly old grandma with pictures in pocket' {or pocketbook} i haven't seen one in about 30 years or more so i was really happy when i spied it in the thrift store bin yesterday. for all of .50 i will now have a mini idea book. i can slip my sketches and clippings etc. into the photo pages and open it up whenever i need a project. i used my colored pencils to create the book cover paper.

and besides, i love square anything and this makes it all the more appealing to me.
