10.17.11 ... an owl takes flight to australia and besos finds a way to keep a close watch on mom

today i made this cute corner bookmark for someone who purchased an owl laden vintage item from joonE. it will be on its way to australia tomorrow. i have a project to share with you but i am going to wait until tomorrow night because there would be too many photos for tonight. here is the reverse of the bookmark...

this one is made from a discarded vintage children's book. it has seen a lot of love but i can find some life in it here and there. and so it lives on. and travels across the world. one last photo for this evening. here is besos trying to make herself invisible so she can stay right near me as i work. she had jumped up on my table and i scolded her and she smooshed herself into the window casing and made herself very comfortable. she's a tricky old bird.

but so adorable.

7.5.11 ... like a cool summer breeze

i also packaged these little pins today and really like the way it turned out so here is that, too...

i used two pieces of paint chip cards. the nifty paper underneath is scout's super groovy handmade notebook find from fred. we went there this morning. bright and early thinking we would get home by noon. but we found too many great things and were there for five hours. we couldn't believe it. have to say goodnight now.

5.22.11 ... a sweet recycled packaging idea

i found this giant texas wall map at a thrift store. it is laminated and cost me next to nothing so i decided to take it to see if i could use it as an envelope for large items. and i sold some vintage sheet music and this worked out perfectly. what i didn't count on, but am especially thrilled with, is that because of the laminate, the package creates an air pocket - since it doesn't fold perfectly flat. so this is wonderful because it protects the contents even better without any extra material , time or effort. i will be using the rest of this map with enthusiasm. now i have to keep an eye out for more. i created this on friday but i saved the photo for today. i did some mending but think this is a much more interesting creation to share with you - as much as i do love my mending. you know i have a thing for it.

4.30.11 ... a different bow and a homemade sticker

i had a busy day because scout had her first two shows with a morning rehearsal to boot. i did get this sale ready for the mailman so i snapped these photos of my wrapping and the extra i tucked inside. i had extra string when i was done with this so i tied another bow. i had still more extra string so i tied a third bow. then i really liked how it looked. i also used one of my handmade stickers to hold the wrap secure. it's from a vintage children's book my sis sent me.

a recycled postcard bokmark as a little surprise extra. i also used a cereal box for the first time ever. it worked perfectly. i did a few things to reinforce the box. the best was wrapping a sheet of bubble wrap between the outside of the box and the brown paper bag wrap. it worked perfectly.

4.18.11 ... little package

i only have a small window of opportunity to create on mondays because we are gone all afternoon. i went on a kitchen cleaning binge all morning which shrank my window down to a nubbin. while scrubbing away i had an order for these gorgeous vintage earrings and decided to use my time preparing the package so i could mail it right out. i used a paint chip card i found last week and a magazine piece from a few years ago. i have used this page bit by bit because i think it's so pretty and this is the very last bit.

farewell pretty page. here is the card remainder. i'm sure you'll see it again one day right here on this station. and this is how i wrapped up the entire package...

i used a magazine piece, my 'new' vintage crochet spool (love this) and made a coordinating thank you recycled bookmark. and last but never least, here's some fun i had with the photo session ...

there's my little sweet potato back in the day. can't believe she turns 17 in a few short weeks. ack! i'll create something more substantial tomorrow. i promise.

4.15.11 ... miniature package fun

i did all kinds of prep work today in my art room. i was cleaning up and organizing bits of things i've saved. i had a stack of junk mail class - read bills - envelopes to recycle. i made a stack of corner bookmark blanks, note paper, circles for pins and magnets, homemade shredded packing paper and something i think is genius but i won't share it with you until i complete the project. but it's pretty cool. i also had this sale to prepare for tomorrow morning's mail and came up with this little recycled card piece. it was actually junk mail based, too. but nice paper as you can probably see. i added the little illustration and slipped it into the teeny ziploc bag. i think it is quite cute.

i hope the buyer enjoys her package. scout and i suddenly feel as though we might be coming down with a cold. bummer. we're having ginger tea in a moment. that should help. emotionally if nothing else. hope you're all well and had a beautiful friday. it's ev's birthday sunday so today began day one of birthday weekend. he's watching daybreak episodes on netflix and loving it.

2.7.11 ... aquarius capricornus vintage library pocket and sweet wrapping

i needed to package up this sweet zodiac ring and had a couple of ideas. one was to make some teeny shredded tissue paper to decorate the inside of the ring's travel method - a miniature ziploc. i also thought it would be fun to toss in some of my mini punched hearts.

here is my hearts jar and below you can see the filled ziploc...

then i wanted to make something astrology themed as a little extra because i have this nifty old discarded book that is about the constellations and planets and the universe. i also have these unused vintage library book pockets. i found that the page & illustration i wanted to use was a perfect fit when trimmed just right. so i covered the pocket with the constellations on the front and the text on the back.

i love the result. lastly, i made one of my thank you for caring bookmarks and taped the ring packet to it to stabilize it for its postal journey. i made a tiny note card from a security envelope and slipped a piece of lavender thread through it to attach it to the bag - which already had a teeny hole built in.

i do hope the recipient will enjoy the packaging and the little extras. i loved creating everything.

evan made two loaves of amish bread yesterday which is soooo deliciously delightful. tonight for dinner we had bacon, avocado, tomato, lettuce and home made blue cheese spread sandwiches on that bread. oh my gravy. outstanding. you might want to try one yourself one night soon.

today i had two etsy sales and i managed to prepare one for mailing before we left for scout's nerd day {as we fondly refer to it}. i wanted to include a little extra and couldn't resist heading to that lovely new sticker stash i am amassing. here is the bookmark ...

here is the item ready to slip into my recycled usps stamp order envelope. they are fabulous. if you haven't ordered stamps online, run, don't walk to the website and do so. you receive your stamps in cello sealed cardboard inserted envelopes - one for each denomination stamp you purchase. i trim off the top and use them for so many things. love them. best of all, though, is that you can choose from all the pretty stamps {most post offices have a very limited selection}, no driving to the p.o. or waiting in line or dealing with anything negative - save money on gas, etc. your order takes minutes to place, there is a one dollar handling fee per order and within 2 days your stamps are in your mailbox. it's the greatest thing since ice cream. true story.

1.26.11 ... bookmark and stickers

how are you all this evening? i have a little bit of this and that for you tonight. i made this bookmark for a customer's package today - from a scrap of board paper. the other side is pale green and i continued with ... i love to read. i also put my www.joonE.etsy.com address along the bottom. here's another photo with my fabulous vintage patchwork pincushion dog in the background. i love him. replicating it is on my wish list for his year. have you ever made one?

i took this photo of batch # 2 stickers now that they are dry and flattened out. i am crazy about these. and look at photo FOUR to see how i have started using them....

how cool is this? i just lick and stick, my friends. way too much fun. this one is covering up a store logo that was in the lower right hand corner of the address panel on this reused packaging. i attached the address after i took this picture.

1.4.11 ... packaging experiments

i have a lot of fun with my packaging as some of you know. i've featured many on my (joonbeam) blog and some of you have received packages from me. today i worked on a triple order and took the opportunity to fiddle around with a semi formulaic approach. no two can ever be the exact same but i do need to make it a little easier on myself because i spend way too much time on preparing my packages for the mail. it's very nice when people appreciate it, but i know there are just as many times when the receiver could care less and here i put so much time, effort and heart into it. which i love to do so therein lies the dilemma. so maybe a compromise can work. here is what i came up with. it's a take-off on the matchbook. if any of you remember those? :)

sadly, it was rainy all day and these are low light pictures so i apologize for the quality. hopefully you can get an idea. i had fun. that's always a good sign. by the way, the bookmarks are something new i started recently. i made these today. i love old postcards and a lot of them actually look better to me sliced into recycled bookmarks. what do you think? i hope the buyer will like her little extras.

the save the whale stamp bookmark was made using the same tagboard - manila folder paper - as the matchbooks. i found this package of paper at the thrift store the other day for a dollar. i don't know why i have never seen it in the stationery stores before. i know i will want more once i run out. i love the stuff. it's so perfect for my earth friendly theme. the fam is awaiting my attention for dessert and west wing so ... thanks for stopping by. until tomorrow. happiness to you. from me. with heart. ox joon

seal.  I stitched a safety envelope circle

onto it just for the heck of it.

The popsicle stick is from 

our delicious Texas Blue Bell ice cream.

packaging fun

I was busy today doing many worthwhile activities like cleaning up kitty barf and doing loads of laundry...but I also had some fun. Here are a couple of photos of a joonbeam sale I got out in today's mail. These are thumbtacks so I recycled a small used bubble envelope, folded in half and wrapped in tissue paper as the safe transporter. The floral box is one of two I found at the thrift store quite a while ago for a quarter. I was happy to find a perfect match for it. The wait has been interminable. :) I hope it brings a smile to the recipient. Ciao for today.

A combination of recycled and new working well together

Here's a recent order all ready to go. I found this THANK YOU stamp irresistible. Since I usually hand write and illustrate everything I had to find a way to incorporate that handmade element. The stitching and colored in hearts satisfy my sensibilities and
transform this into one of my bookmarks
all at the same time.

This card doubles as a securing device for
the magnets {seen below}. The handmade corner bookmark
is a combo of recycled papers & added touches.
It compliments the magnets.

I love quotes. Especially handwritten versions.

These magnets are attached
with a mere loop of scotch tape
so they are easily removed, no harm done.
Viola ~ another bookmark.

I know I spend way too much time on my packages, but I seem unable to break this special treatment habit. I'd love to hear about & see your packaging style.

Mixed~Up ART

Scout had her first sale
just a few hours after listing her 4th shop item!
Look at the incredible illustration she drew
on the back of the envelope.
I'm betting on one happy buyer walking back
from the post office.

These are two ACEOs Scout made
for her friends back in Arlington.
We laminated them and love the effect.

Meanwhile,
I wanted to edit the original recipe for our Thai soup.
{Photo in a previous post.}
I love the result.
I took the magazine page with their photo,
trimmed and folded it in thirds,
hand printed my version,
added simple illustrations,
attached it to the reverse,
laminated it
and viola! a recipe bookmark.
Evan wants me to do this will all my clipped recipes now.

Scout's busy working on a large art piece as I type.
